Apogee, elation, intoxicating crown #006. The Great Themes, Series 1 is a collection of diptychs by Charles Nix, within the larger series Helvetica. Now. Variable. The NFTs by Monotype x KnownUnknown. As with all works in the larger series, Great Themes uses the most contemporary incarnation of the Helvetica type family: Helvetica Now Variable. Helvetica, designed by Max Miedinger in the late 1950s, was the Haas Foundry’s attempt to create the clearest, simplest, and most neutral typeface ever. The Great Themes, Series 1 consists of 15 pairs of digital artworks minted as NFTs on the Avalanche blockchain. Each pair takes as its subject the grand themes of art, music, and literature. The first half of each diptych is a word—carefully set in Helvetica Now Variable. The precise instructions for how that word is set, down to the thousandths-of-an-em kerning amounts, are detailed in the second half of the diptych.
